One of Edisto Electric Cooperative’s core values is commitment to community. Our employees work here, live here, and share the same values as you. And like you, we believe that the future of our community lies with our children.
Edisto Electric offers scholarship opportunities to qualifying students within its service area annually. Through programs like the Washington Youth Tour, the R.D. Bennett Scholarship, and W.I.R.E.’s Jenny Ballard Scholarship, we are keeping our commitment to the community, and to the future.
Each year, winners of the Washington Youth Tour contest are qualified to compete for the Robert D. Bennett Scholarship through The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina (ECSC). A one-time check in the amount of $5,000 will be issued to the student and the college, university, trade or tech school of the winning student’s choice, after the registrar’s office completes the proper paperwork. The $5,000 college scholarship is presented to a student who completes a community service project that best exemplifies the cooperative principle of “concern for community.”
The R.D. Bennett Community Service Scholarship is named for Robert D. Bennett, the first general manager and executive vice president of The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc. Bennett, who led the state association from 1950 until his retirement in 1980, strongly believed that electric cooperatives should support their local communities—providing a better quality of life for their members. His spirit of community service is reflected in this scholarship opportunity.
Jenny Ballard co-founded WIRE (Women Involved in Rural Electrification) in 1981, and is the widow of then ECSC Chief Executive Officer, Al Ballard. This scholarship, in her name is sponsored by WIRE.
